TESL 0170 Practicum - Teaching Lesson 2 Reflection
For today’s
class, I covered the second half of Chapter 3: Part 2, which focuses on banking
terms and concepts. I began the class with a game of Kahoot and was happy to
see that the students were able to correctly answer the majority of the vocabulary
questions! The students really enjoy this game, so I’ll be sure to incorporate
it again in my future lessons. After this, I got the students to start focusing
on stress in noun compounds. I had them complete several activities focusing on
this, involving speaking, listening and writing skills. I then ended the class
with them completing a roleplay, where they acted out a conversation between a student
and a bank employee. At the end of class, my practicum teacher advised me that
him and I will have to get the students to complete their third evaluation
activity for the course. I hope to work on something over the weekend.
What Worked Well:
I felt much more confident teaching my class today, now that I was able
to get a feel of the course material, the student’s abilities, and of course my
own abilities. Wednesday was my first time ever teaching a class, so I was very
nervous starting out. Now that I know what to expect I feel much more
comfortable in my role as a teacher. Compared to last class, I feel my explanations
of the different activities were also much clearer, and so easier for the students
to follow.
I was able to successfully incorporate feedback from my practicum
teacher. I was able to slow down my speech for the students, incorporated more
time for students to produce and use the language, and was able to go over the
vocabulary more thoroughly with the students. The results from the Kahoot vocabulary
quiz and the students’ ability to use the vocabulary in sentences really showed
me that the students had successfully understood the content that I had taught
during the last class. I was able to
implement many more comprehension checks, which also helped to gauge how the students
were handling the course content.
I’m also happy that I was able to complete my lesson in a timely manner!
The only activity we ended up not doing was the hangman game. It’s a fun
activity to use vocabulary, so I might use it in another lesson.
Lastly, I feel I am really making some good connections with the
students. They are asking me more questions and are more readily approaching me
for help.
What to tweak:
One thing my practicum supervisor pointed out is that I need to diversify
my error correction methods. I tended to stick to simply giving corrections
explicitly, rather than use other methods where the student needs to work at
coming up with an answer. So, for next lesson, I’ll try to incorporate a
variety of error corrections methods, such as recasting, eliciting, etc.
Another point that I need to
focus on is changing up student groupings. I only had the students to pair
work, so for next time I’ll try to include group sharing as well as pair work.
